Overview…

Keyframe is an investment firm that focuses on solving capital markets challenges to unlock growth and propel innovation. We are currently expanding the Growth team to invest out our newest fund, focused primarily on energy transition and related themes.

In your role as an Associate or Principal on the Biz Dev team, you will work on corporate and business development across the platform – from its investment process, to strategic projects for the portfolio, to expanding the firm (i.e. LP, talent, and corporate engagement). You will help lead the firm in its in-market activities that both grow the business, grow the universe of addressable investment opportunities, and grow the value of the underlying portfolio.

We are hiring at various levels, but the goals described below are consistent at every level of seniority.

About Keyframe…

Keyframe has a very wide investment mandate. Our private investments target $10-50m in size, and range from standard venture capital and private equity, to bespoke credit structures, and everything in between.

We dive deep into industry segments to identify and invest in future winners regardless of stage - and then leverage our team’s deep experience in capital markets, special situations, complex private financings, and corporate partnerships to structure investments in whatever way creates the most value for the company and situation.

In our typical investment process, we pick a market segment that we believe is going to go through some sort of disruptive change (often technology or regulatory driven) and intensely focus our efforts on understanding this market & building the relationships to effectively invest in it. We call this a market segment blitz. On our business development team, you’ll be quarterbacking these blitzes and synthesizing learnings from them to help steer our investment process.

Some additional Keyframe facts:

  • We have been investing as a team since 2017, launched our first fund in Jan 2020, currently have ~$1B AUM, and are planning to continue to grow (you’re joining at the beginning)

  • We’re currently team of eight

  • We leverage a 17-person infrastructure team (trading, offices, IT, accounting, etc.) of a larger firm – allowing us to be entrepreneurial with an institutional backbone.

  • We currently have ~20 companies in our private portfolio. Check out our blog for a sampling of investment analyses and press releases.

  • We’re quite often board directors of portfolio companies. You’ll have substantive opportunities to work closely with the management teams that you cover.

What you’ll do…

You will lead the firm in its in-market activities to grow the business and the value of the portfolio. There are three core components

1) Understand business development priorities of Keyframe and its portfolio, prioritize between them, and build plans/set goals for how to achieve them. Examples include:

  • Collaborating with the investment team on market segment selection / market segment blitzes

  • Engaging with chief officers of Keyframe portfolios to understand their portfolio goals

  • Generating ideas through your market engagement with corporate innovation leaders

  • Etc.

2) Execute the activities necessary to hit those business goals. Examples include:

  • Building relationships with relevant stakeholders (CEOs of target companies, corporate innovation and partnerships team in relevant industry categories, investors up and down the company lifecycle, capital allocators) – to be deeply informed on market change & potential investment opportunities

  • Strategize how to best leverage Keyframe’s flexible mandate to be in position to be the best partner to companies as they contemplate their financing plans

  • Work on unique and value add corporate development projects for our portfolio (i.e. partnerships, raising capital)

  • Be a key player in raising capital for Keyframe’s future funds

  • Facilitate customer relationships, originate and negotiate partnerships, and source executive talent for various portfolio companies

3) Selectively work on business plans in key market segments to launch Keyframe’s next incubation. Keyframe’s last incubation was TeraWatt Infrastructure.

Why you’ll win...

  • You have a track record for being wildly enterprising. You’re excited to be in a room of strangers to figure out how you can create value for each of them, and you’re effective at identifying that, communicating it quickly and clearly, and engaging them in next steps appropriately.

  • You intuitively understand business equations. You don’t need more than a few pieces of information about a business model to daydream its margin profile and operating levers. You’re effective at quickly synthesizing both qualitative and quantitative information.

  • You have an ability to hit the ground running. That usually looks like 3-10+ years of work experience in a related field (at a high growth startup, consulting, investment banking, or something technical related to energy transition).

  • You REALLY like to meet new people. You can walk into that room of strangers and leave with five friends.

  • You have endless curiosity. When you have a question, you’re just dying to ask it.

  • You’re competitive. You’re accustomed to winning and just cannot stand losing. You set an exceed goals for yourself.

  • You know what you know, and what you don’t. You’ll be in over your head all the time. You’ll be clear about fact versus interpretation and won’t feel pressure to pretend to know anything that you don’t. You’re comfortable identifying gaps in your knowledge and ask for help.

  • You take incredible pride in your ability to communicate. Whether it be over email, Zoom, the phone, in-person meetings, group discussions, presentations… no matter the medium, you’re very confident in your ability to tell a compelling story.

  • You sweat the details, simply because they matter. You don’t need someone to inspect your work.

  • You want work to be fun, and dynamic. Because you’re fun and dynamic. You care about culture. You want to work in a place that enables you to get the most out of your enterprising nature and have a blast while you’re doing it. You want to work with people who not only want that too but believe that it matters to run a successful company.

What you’ll learn...

Your core job responsibilities require you to learn constantly. You’ll be building a deep understanding of Keyframe’s investment criteria, coverage areas, portfolio needs, and will apply that in-market to drive the most value for investment, portfolio, and operational outcomes.

With your success, you’ll hone your executive level business development skills in several areas. You will learn how to best engage with CEOs, CFOs, board members, investors, industry stakeholders, and will come out of the experience having developed executive level communication skills, seasoned deal-making sensibilities, and other corporate development and business planning skills.

As you become more senior with Keyframe, you will leverage your relationships to lead various aspects of Keyframe’s investment process: investment diligence, investment modeling, structuring, negotiation, legal documentation, and portfolio operations. Given that Keyframe invests in a wide variety of company and deal types, you’ll have exposure to investment strategies in venture equity, private equity, corporate debt (public and private). At a certain point, you’ll have learned enough about each of those things to be a Partner at Keyframe, somewhere else, or to be a valuable force in joining a company or starting your own.

Additional information...

  • Competitive salary and target bonus. Opportunities to outperform target bonus will exist.

  • Comprehensive benefits, including: healthcare (medical, dental, vision), retirement, commuter, in-office gym, in office meals, an endless supply of Girl Scout cookies, holiday parties, non-holiday parties, spontaneous fun, a quarterly firm swag refresh, and an invitation to the firm’s annual trip.

  • Expectation of travel up to 25-50% of the time to various investor and industry conferences, and occasional visits to Keyframe target or portfolio companies

  • Flexible PTO policy
